Already converted form of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan
5-HTP is the abbreviation for 5-hydroxytryptophan. The amino acid L-tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP in the body and from there into serotonin and melatonin. 5-HTP is therefore the basic substance of both substances, and therefore a more direct pathway than L-tryptophane. 5-HTP is well absorbed, even when taken with meals, and easily passes the blood-brain barrier. 5-HTP does not suffer from competition with other amino acids. It does not require a (common) transport molecule like other amino acids (including L-tryptophan).
L-tryptophane also converts less than 5% into the substances serotonin and melatonin (95% is converted into other substances). However, 5-HTP can be used entirely for the production of serotonin and melatonin. Therefore, 5-HTP is a targeted supplement for serotonin and melatonin levels.
5-HTP is extracted from the seeds of the African black bean (Griffonia simplicifolia).
