As a medicinal plant, lemon balm has a millennia-old tradition. The Greek physician Serapion of Alexandria wrote about lemon balm 200 years before Christ: "It delights the mind, clears the ducts of the brain, aids digestion, strengthens the faltering or weakened heart, drives out all unpleasant imaginings from the brain, in particular those that make a person melancholy."
Paracelsus called the herb an elixir of life: "Melissa is of all things that the earth produces the best herb for the heart." He used lemon balm for the heart, mind, brain, memory, for headaches, to cure "contractures and paralysis," for podagra, gout, leprosy, asthma, as a sedative and antispasmodic, for anxiety and depression, and to "renew the powers of the body and awaken the spirits of life."
Arab healers and European physicians such as Evelyn praised it until the 17th century as an elixir of life for the heart, mind, brain, memory, against headaches, leprosy, "contractures and paralysis", gout, asthma and as a sedative and antispasmodic. It was said to revive the sick and bring back youth. Emperor Charlemagne ordered lemon balm to be grown in every monastery garden. It was supposed to bring back youth and revive those who were dying.
Hildegard von Bingen formulated in the 12th century, "Lemon balm has the power of 15 herbs, cheers up and strengthens the heart." And, "Lemon balm is warm and the person who eats it likes to laugh, because it gladdens the heart and spleen." Melissa oil has a long tradition in liqueur making and became the secret remedy of French Carmelites. John Evelyn stated in 1679, "Lemon balm is a miracle remedy for the brain. It strengthens the memory and drives away melancholy."
